The Protection of the Gods
A Huichol story by Jose Benitez Sanchez
The Gods aren't sleeping, they rest during the dry season, when it's not raining, the winter time. Why gods don't drink any water during the dry season, they fast and that's the way they live.
At the end of the rainy time, the nierika gods keep humidity for the resting season just in case the earth requires a little. This is how they are able to stay alive in the three worlds.
This is how we know about the life of the gods, where they were born, in the earth, in the rocks, in the valleys and the mountains and the volcanos too. Cayumariye lives there, in the fire, in the volcano's flames, that's the way Cayumariye is known.
