Twenty minutes from the Puerto Vallarta airport, on the North of the Bay of Banderas in a little fishing village called La Cruz de Huanacaxtle, is HIKURI. It was started in 1993 by three English people, Wayland Combe-Wright, Aruna Piroshki and their daughter Kaerolik, as a bridge between ancient traditions and modern technology - a fund raising venture to support weaving development in the Huichol Sierra. The name, is from the Huichol language - it means peyote - the hallucinogenic cactus that is the sacrament in the Huichol ceremonies, and a central theme to their art. |
